The Dark and Those Who Keep It

October 5, 2007

Our universe sits afloat a vast sea of chaotic Nothingness. The ravenous hunger of the Void constantly consumes the infinite unfulfilled possibilities generated by the universe, and still is not sated. The Void wishes for more. While it cannot itself enter this world, from time to time the Void seeps into our reality as the Dark.

The Dark manifests itself in many ways, but its primary form is the corruption of all things. Consciousness is a corruption of life. Life is a corruption of matter. Matter is a corruption of energy. Through this corruption, the Dark has molded our existence from a swirl of higher level energies into what we can see today. The Void has used its influence through the Dark to control the destiny of our world.

It is in the minds of men that the Dark asserts its true power. Manipulating matter and energy is easy, and slowly the universe will die an agonizing entropic heat death. But in consciousness, the Dark may assert its will more directly. However, we are not mere puppets; we must be seduced into obeying the Dark’s whim.

Therefore, the Dark presents opportunities for mankind to dominate themselves. The struggle for power of strength and power of will gratifies the mind of man. And so the quest for power corrupts everyone who travels along the road. Will and desire provide the illusion of freedom, all the while serving the interests of the Dark. But the Will of Man is strong; some inevitably resist.

Those who have met the Dark and yet remained uncorrupted are known as the Keepers. A Keeper comes face to face with the Dark, rejects its will, and takes a piece of the Dark’s power inside themselves. This is no easy task. In order to take on such power and remain uncorrupted requires an extraordinary force of will. Moreover, a Keeper must have an altruistic or apathetic worldview.

Any desire within the Keeper could allow them to use their newfound power. Even trying to use the power for a seemingly good purpose could irreparably corrupt the Keeper. Once corrupted, the Keeper would become a powerful ally in exerting the will of the Dark and the Void upon the world.

Because of this danger, Keepers of the Dark typically exile themselves from the world. The only company they may keep is the Dark itself; a hostile relationship in which the Dark is constantly tempting the Keeper, who must continually refuse to give in. Relenting to the Dark’s constant barrage can only lead to becoming its puppet, losing the Will that overcame it in the first place.

It is prophesied that one day a Keeper will be borne into this world that will overcome the corruptive will of the Dark. Such a Keeper would be able to utilize power that can only come from tapping into the swirling chaos of the Void. Whether this Keeper will use this power for good or evil is unknown…
